O Air Supply no HSBC, São Paulo, 2012

O Air Supply apresentou-se na noite de ontem (14/03) no HSBC em São Paulo e novamente fez a festa dos fãs que lotaram a casa de show!

Apesar de uma falha no som durante a performance de Even The Nights Are Better, a banda não se intimidou e não permitiu que o problema - logo resolvido, trouxesse maiores complicações a sua emocionante apresentação.

Além de alguns dos seus hits mais famosos, como Goodbye, Just As I Am e All Out of Love, os rapazes também cantaram a inédita Everywhere e Sanctuary - esta, um single lançada no iTunes em 2011 e já conhecida do público brasileiro desde sua última passagem por aqui naquele mesmo ano.

O ponto alto do show foi mesmo quando Graham e Russell desceram do palco e cantaram entre os fãs as baladas The One That You Love e Lost in Love. Pura emoção e uma inesquecível prova de carinho e gratidão aos fãs, que estavam com as emoções a mil!

Segue o set list do show, que apesar de conter, praticamente, as mesmas canções das últimas turnês, continua agradando a maioria dos milhares de fãs que esperam anualmente pelo retorno da banda à sua cidade.

Air Supply no Siará Hall, Fortaleza (2012)

Mais uma vez, os fãs cearenses foram agraciados por uma apresentação belíssima do Air Supply na noite de 17 de março no Siará Hall!

O show começou às 11h e terminou perto de 1h da madrugada. Graham e Russell, apesar do cansaço visível (e previsível, por causa do show da noite anterior em Recife) estavam com a mesma energia de sempre, ou podemos até dizer, que estavam mais eufóricos que nunca. Seu carisma e interação com os fãs (que lotaram a casa - embora no ano passado havia bem mais público) roubaram a cena. Os músicos da banda estavam todos muito afinados, como sempre. O novo guitarrista, Aaron Maclain deu um show a parte na guitarra e o público delirou. Russell encantou a platéia, mais "elétrico", impossível rs Graham não parava de elogiar Fortaleza, nosso país e o fã clube deles aqui. Falou que moramos em seus corações. Ah, ele exibiu com bastante orgulho e alegria sua nova guitarra toda dourada. Muito bonita mesmo!

           

A música de abertura foi novamente Even The Nights Are Better, com os seus primeiros versos do refrão a capela, como na turnê de 2011. Já foi o bastante para "por fogo" no Siará Hall. Em Sweet Dreams houve um pequeno problema no microfone de Russell e sua participação na primeira parte da música ficou emudecida. No entanto, os fãs perceberam de imediato e cantaram para ele sua estrofe. Nada poderia dar errado naquela noite. Em All Out of Love, Graham e Russell foram pegos de supresa com o coral afinado, cantando em bom inglês o refrão de seu primeiro sucesso no Brasil. Os rapazes se emocionaram. Russell ficava de um lado para o outro pedindo mais e mais agitação da platéia e nem precisava. Todos estavam seduzidos pelo som dos rapazes e seu carisma contagiante. Os músicos foram bastante aplaudidos. Aposto que o novato Aaron Maclain nunca tinha visto platéias tão cheias de energia como as do Brasil. 

     

O Air Supply continuou cantando alguns de seus maiores sucessos no país, desde All Out of Love. Os fãs se deliciaram com clássicos do pop romântico internacional que marcaram épocas. Sendo assim, não poderiam faltar também Lost in Love, Power of Love, Just As I Am, Goodbye (novamente cantada em côro pelos fãs), The One That You Love (música escolhida pela banda nas últimas turnês para eles descerem do palco e irem até seus súditos, impressionados com o show e a proximidade real dos seus ídolos), Here I Am e Making Love Out of Nothing at All. Em Dance With Me, Graham chamou uma fã para cantar com ele e a banda mostrou seu lado mais rockeiro com Me Like You, ambas do seu último álbum Mumbo Jumbo.

O set list foi o mesmo de São de Paulo e Recife. A novidade ficou mesmo com a apresentação das belas e inéditas Desert Sea Sky (tem uma batida parecida com a de Sanctuary na sua versão inicial e Everywhere (tocada sozinha por Graham acompanhado de seu violão e banquinho). Aliás, a nova versão de Sanctuary ficou belíssima e mais vigorosa. Mais pesada, "rockeira", graças à guitarra fantástica de Aaron). Meus amigos Mábriley, Drica e o primo Oswaldo (para quem vai um agradecimento especial do trio) estavam comigo e eu tirei muitas fotos ao "pé do palco". Mostramos nossas camisas do fã clube ao Graham e Russell, que retribuiram com largos sorrisos de felicidade e sinais de "OK" nas mãos. Foi muito bom rever amigos como Vânia, Anderson, Maria de Assis, Mateus, Márcio (do fã clube cearense) e conhecer pessoalmente outros fãs, como Cris, Joelson, Milene e Norma. Enfim, foi uma noite memorável  e por que não, merecidamente histórica?

Air Supply - "Soap Operas: A History of Success in Brazil!" (Part 2)

From the late 1986 to 1990, fans would have to face the total absence of new songs and any news related to their favorite romantic pop rock band. It seemed they would have to live with the eternal doubt about whether or not they would have broken up. If there only would be the internet those dark years! Russell Hitchcock, suddenly would appear here with a solo album and even would have a minor hit out of it, Someone Who Believes In You. It did look like the end then... But amazingly, Lonely Is The Night would return to the top charts again, oddly after 4 years it had been released. And guess what would be the responsible for that? Exactly. Once again, a soap opera. The soundtrack to Barriga de Aluguel (Surrogacy, 1990, theme for Ana, played by Cassia Kiss), would catapult the song straight to the top for the second time.

 Lonely Is The Night would definitely be one of those rare cases when a song becomes successful more than once at different times. Remember Unchained Melody? This song was a hit in the USA back in 1955 when it was first released by Todd Duncan. However, only in 1965 would reach the top of the charts in that country, as re-recorded by the duo The Righteous Brothers. Surprisingly, it would come back more powerfully than ever in 1990, when the duo’s version featured the worldwide famous movie soundtrack of Ghost (starring the late Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg). Accidentally, in the near future Air Supply also would record their version of this song on their 1995 forthcoming album, News From Nowhere and gain more success and recognition.

Still talking about Lonely Is The Night, its impressive successful revival by following its inclusion on the soundtrack of Barriga de Aluguel, would make Arista (the band’s label in the country) finally release the much awaited album Hearts In Motion. It’s their only album released in Brazil where you can see covers totally different from the original one. Right after its release, their fans still would turn You're Only in Love into another radio hit in 1986.

Then it was 1993 and a new song of the guys would be included on a soundtrack of a soap opera. That time, Goodbye. It would feature the album with the original international sound track of O Mapa da Mina (Map of the Mine - as a theme for Ligia, played by Gisela Marques). A smash hit in Brazil and the same successful story would happen. Once again, Air Supply would dominate the charts throughout the country. They would finally come to Brazil for their very first time to promote their new album, The Vanishing Race. The concerts took place in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, but the total lack of an efficient promotion in really taking into account the high status of the band as kings of the international romantic pop rock in the country, only contributed to the concerts had not had the expected audience. Just in Brazil, where there has always been a huge number of loyal fans of Air Supply.


Goodbye would be their last song to feature some soundtrack for a soap opera, at least originally performed by them. In 2010, Marcela Mangabeira -a young Brazilian singer, would re-record their first worldwide hit Lost in Love and her version in bossa nova rhythm would feature the soundtrack of the 6 pm’s soap opera Escrito nas Estrelas (Written In The Stars - as a general love theme). Oh, we can not forget O Amor E O Poder by Rosanna. Her Portuguese version for The Power of Love (1984) which in 1987-1988 became a #1 hit after being included on the soundtrack of Mandala (theme for Jocasta, played by Vera Fischer). Oddly, Rosanna would never repeat the same success and her version in Portuguese scored much more than its original English version, recorded by Air Supply, Laura Branigan and Jennifer Rush. O Amor e O Poder even would overshadow all their recordings in the country.

Air Supply - "Soap Operas: A History of Success in Brazil!" (Part 1)

What's in common between Air Supply and the Brazilian soap operas? Graham and Russell probably were never aware about that, but those TV dramas were the vehicle which most served as massive promotion and solidification of their huge success in the country during the '80s and '90s, thanks to the soundtrack albums from some of its most popular soap operas.

It's amazing how the inclusion of a song by an artist as a theme for some of the main characters in a soap opera, practically, can guarantee their success in the media, increasingly hungry for something new. Thanks to the insistent playing of their songs, almost every day during the most exciting moments of the plots, artists - before unknown, leave their total anonymity and become the darlings of the media overnight, while the promotion of new hits by artists already known in the country, only further solidifies their status as popularly regarded artists who will continue grabbing legions of fans to their shows. The selling of their singles and albums usually hit records, while their new songs can be turned into instant hits, giving birth to brand new pop idols.
 

In 1980, nothing was heard of Air Supply in Brazil until the end of that year, when a new ballad in English began to be played as the theme of one of the leading characters of the 8 pm’s soap opera, Coração Alado ("Winged Heart", broadcast on prime-time TV in Brazil) . It was All out of Love (Catucha’s theme, played by actress Deborah Duarte). The song quickly started to be played on all Brazilian main radio stations and soon reached the top of all charts. Air Supply was arriving in Brazil, despite of their early success in Australia, the United States and other countries since 1975 through their early hits Lost in Love"and Love and Other Bruises (his very first one) . The original soundtrack album with the international themes for that soap opera would easily become one of the bestselling albums of the decade - the gold era of vynil, which would also include mega hits like "The Winner Takes It All" (by ABBA) and "Survive" (by Jimmy Buffet). All out of Love would definitely open all doors to Air Supply new songs in Brazil.


Thanks to the release of their first album (Lost in Love) in the country in the late 1980, fans of those harmonious refined voices would be delighted with two more big hits that were coming in early 1981! Every Woman in the World and the album title track would get to all radios with the same power of All out of Love, thus leading their album to the top of the charts. Despite all the success, the Brazilians still knew very little about Air Supply.

Due the arrival of their new album, The One That You Love, 1981 would be another important year for the guys in Brazil. It all happened while they had several singles of the previous album being incessantly played on the radios. In 1982, the band would have a new song included as one of the main theme in another soap opera and their popularity would only grow stronger and stronger. Even the Nights Are Better, taken from his 1982 album "Now And Forever", was included on the soundtrack of the 7 pm's soap Elas Por Elas (Natalia’s theme, played by Joan Fomm). Absolute success again and Air Supply seemed the only thing you could hear on the radios, at all kinds of balls, simply everywhere!
 

In the late 1983 and early 1984, SIGLA, a music company owned by TV Globo, for some reason did not get the original phonogram (they were all bought from the artists record companies specially to feature the Globo TV soap opera soundtracks) of the brand new single of the guys. It would be precisely that which would become in the future, perhaps their greatest “anthem” among their fans: Making Love out of Nothing at All. Thus, as in other cases like that, SIGLA would choose to include the song played by an unknown band, Fresh Air. The soap opera name was Champagne (Ronaldo and Veronica’s love theme, respectively interpreted by Carlos Augusto Strazzer and Maria Isabel de Lizandra), which despite the faux pas, its soundtrack album sold thousands of copies by hitchhiking, of course, the overwhelming success of the original track by Air Supply being played all over the planet. They reigned supreme in the pop rock romantic scenery of the country.

1985 would be a year when the band would hit the charts again, due the huge success of Just As I Am and I Can Wait Forever, which had begun still in 1984. The second was included as one of the main themes for the 7 pm’s soap Um Sonho A Mais (One Dream More – as a theme for Joaquim, played by Edson Celulari). In 1986, another song started playing in the country, which would hook the hearts of their fans forever. Lonely Is The Night reached the top of the charts easily, making an unbeatable trio along with Just As I Am and I Can Wait Forever, which would still remain steadily on top for a long time. The most intriguing about Lonely Is The Night is that it ended up becoming such a strange case of absolute success whereas  you didn’t know where the song came from. There were not any new singles or albums of Air Supply being released that time in Brazil, but the song became fast a huge hit for most fans. Lonely Is The Night, I Can Wait Forever and Just As I Am would remain on top for many years ahead, while the public would still be trying to recover from the "infectious" success of Making Love out of Nothing at All.

Air Supply - "Novelas: Uma História de Sucessos no Brasil! (Parte 2)

De 1986 a 1990, os fãs amargaram um silêncio total de novidades musicais e notícias relacionadas à sua banda de pop rock romântico favorita. Eles tiveram que conviver com a dúvida quase eterna de que a banda teria ou não se separado. Quanta falta fez a internet naqueles tempos sombrios! Russell Hitchcock, de repente, apareceu por aqui com um álbum solo e ainda chegou a emplacar timidamente um sucesso, Someone Who Believes In You. Parecia então o fim... Mas eis que Lonely Is The Night retorna às paradas outra vez, estranhamente após 4 anos de seu lançamento. E adivinhem o que seria responsável pela façanha? Exatamente. Mais uma vez, uma telenovela. A trilha sonora de Barriga de Aluguel (1990 e atualmente sendo reprisada pela Viva, um canal de TV a cabo da Globo) incluiu o famoso hit da banda (como tema de Ana, interpretada pela ainda Cássia Kiss), levando a canção direto para o topo pela segunda vez.

Lonely Is The Night seria um daqueles raros casos, quando uma canção faz o mesmo (ou mais) sucesso por mais de uma vez em épocas diferentes. Lembram do famoso hit Unchained Melody? Esta canção fez sucesso em 1955, quando foi primeiramente lançada por Todd Duncan, mas somente em 1965 iria atingir o topo das paradas nos States, através da gravação da dupla The Righteous Brothers. Ah, não podemos também esquecer de O Amor E O Poder (Rosanna), versão em português para The Power of Love (1984) que em 1987-1988 fez um estrondoso sucesso após ser incluída na trilha sonora da novela das 8h, Mandala (tema de Jocasta, interpretada por Vera Fischer). Estranhamente, a cantora nunca mais conseguiria repetir o mesmo êxito e a música em português marcou muito mais que a versão original em inglês, gravada por Air Supply, Laura Branigan e Jennifer Rush, chegando até mesmo a ofuscar todas as versões originais tocadas no país.

Air Supply - "Novelas: Uma História de Sucessos no Brasil!" (Parte 1)

O que há em comum entre o Air Supply e as telenovelas no Brasil? Provavelmente, Graham e Russell nunca souberam, mas o veículo brasileiro que mais serviu de divulgação maciça e solidificação do enorme sucesso deles no país durante os anos 80 e 90 foram exatamente as trilhas sonoras de algumas das novelas mais populares.

É incrível como a inclusão de uma música de um artista como tema de algum dos personagens principais numa telenovela, praticamente, pode garantir o seu sucesso na mídia, cada vez mais sedenta por novidade. Graças à divulgação, quase que diária de sua música nos momentos mais emocionantes da trama, artistas - antes desconhecidos, saem do anonimato total e tornam-se os queridinhos da mídia de um dia para outro, enquanto a divulgação dos novos hits dos artistas já conhecidos no país, apenas consolida ainda mais seus status de artistas consagrados popularmente e que continuam arrebatando multidões de fãs aos seus shows. A vendagem dos seus singles e álbuns normalmente bate recordes e essas músicas viram hits instantâneos, gerando os novos ídolos pops.

Em 1980, nada se sabia sobre o Air Supply no Brasil, até que no final daquele mesmo ano, uma balada em inglês começou a ser tocada como tema de uma das  protagonistas da novela das 8h, Coração Alado, exibida no horário nobre da TV brasileira. Era All out of Love (tema de Catucha, interpretada pela atriz Débora Duarte). A canção começou a ser tocada rapidinho em todas as emissoras de rádio e logo atingiu o primeiro lugar nas paradas nacionais. O Air Supply chegava então ao Brasil, mesmo já sendo sucesso na Austrália, Estados Unidos e outros países desde 1975, em cuja bagagem de êxitos no exterior encontravam-se Lost in Love e Love and other Bruises (seu primeiro sucesso). O álbum com a trilha sonora internacioal original da novela se tornaria um dos discos mais vendidos daquela década e incluiria também mega sucessos como “The Winner Takes It All” (ABBA) e “Survive” (Jimmy Buffet). “All out of love” abriria as portas definitivamente para os novos hits da banda no Brasil. 


 Com o lançamento do seu primeiro álbum aqui, Lost in Love (final de 1980), logo os fãs daquelas vozes tão harmoniosas e afinadas iriam se deleitar com mais dois grandes sucessos que estavam por vir no início de 1981! Every Woman in the World e a faixa título chegariam às rádios com o mesmo furor de All out of Love, levando assim o seu álbum para o topo das paradas. Apesar de todo o sucesso, o público brasileiro continuava sabendo muito pouco sobre o Air Supply.

Com a chegada do seu novo álbum, The One That You Love, 1981 seria mais um ano importante para os rapazes no Brasil. Tudo acontecia ao mesmo tempo em que eles tinham vários singles do lp anterior tocando incessantemente nas rádios. Em 1982, a banda teria uma nova canção incluída como um dos temas principais de uma outra telenovela e a sua popularidade apenas cresceria mais e mais. Even the Nights Are Better, tirada do seu álbum de 1982 – Now And Forever, foi inserida como um dos principais temas românticos da novela Elas Por Elas (tema de Natália, interpretada por Joana Fomm). Sucesso absoluto outra vez e o Air Supply era só o que se ouvia nos rádios, bailes, carros, em todo lugar!

Sendo assim, a exemplo de outros casos como esse, a SIGLA optou por incluir a canção interpretada por uma banda desconhecida, Fresh Air. A novela era Champagne (tema de Ronaldo e Verônica, respectivamente interpretados pelo saudoso Carlos Augosto Strazzer e Maria Isabel de Lizandra), que apesar de todo o transtorno, seu álbum obteria uma ótima vendagem, pegando carona, logicamente, no sucesso estrondoso da faixa original tocada pelo Air Supply em todo o planeta. Eles reinavam absolutos no cenário do pop rock romântico internacional no nosso país.
